TEXT: Gal. 3 (16) ”Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ”
INTRO: Everyone seeks greatness, as such. Who wants to be a failure? Downtrodden? Yet TRUE greatness is defined by God, which man cannot attain to.; not without Christ.
During the creation process, the bible says in Genesis Chapter One
11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good. 13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.
That’s a built-in reproduction.
Later, God spoke to a man called Abram; and it’s true, He told him that his children would be MANY (the Jews are the natural family that originated from this man). That was a promise to Abraham, but there was more. It’s important, because it was about Jesus-the Savior of the world. In Romans Chapter 9 esp. the 7th verse, it clearly explains, that Israel is the SEED of Abraham (descendants) and Chapter One shows that Jesus was also. The whole family tree is written in Matt. Ch. 1. In John 8, the JEWS BRAGGED that they are “the SEED of Abraham”. But the ONE they bragged TO, was the SEED of Greatness; Jesus!
I. The Promises of God are SURE
There is evidence and great emphasis in the scriptures upon the DEPENDABILITY of God. He CANNOT lie, DOESN’T lie, and KEEPS his promises!
His PROMISES to Abraham were SO important, that even the New Testament refers to them as the basis of SALVATION; CHRISTIANITY: God’s ANSWER for man’s sin problem.
Being truly BORN AGAIN; to many, it’s only part of their “creed”. However, it is a total transformation of life, a literal process performed by the Holy Spirit as promised by God. We must be BORN into His family, by His Spirit, and by the blood of Christ. This makes you part of the SEED.
II. The only way to be saved is by the Promises of God
The following excludes all human merit as a basis for being saved;
That means that salvation, (being born again, saved,) it a totally a matter of God’s GRACE. There is nothing you can do to save yourself.
“ Why do you let it govern the way you live then? Aren’t you trying to be saved?” some will ask. That is a no-brainer that the scripture answered long ago, as the question was posed long ago;
1 What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? 2 God forbid. How shall we, that are dead to sin, live any longer therein?
11 For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, 12 Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; 13 Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14 Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. 15 These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
4 For there are certain men crept in unawares, who were before of old ordained to this condemnation, ungodly men, turning the grace of our God into lasciviousness, and denying the only Lord God, and our Lord Jesus Christ
He then illustrates that, even though God had brought Israel out of Egypt (graciously) their sin forced Him to destroy them that didn’t obey Him. Many us “the grace of God” as an excuse even today, for denying the Lord. Refusing to obey Him, refusing to walk uprightly before Him. Comforting themselves with deeds of benevolence (‘good works’) yet walking after the flesh.
6 Even as Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness. 7 Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. 8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. 9 So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. 10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. 11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. 12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. 13 Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. 15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man’s covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. 16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. 17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. 18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
I Peter 2
17 And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man’s work, pass the time of your sojourning here in fear: 18 Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers;
YOU WEREN’T BOUGHT BACK (redeemed) FROM THE DEVIL BY GOD’S MONEY! Not YOUR money, nor your GREATNESS or Character…
…19 But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: 20 Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you, 21 Who by him do believe in God, that raised him up from the dead, and gave him glory; that your faith and hope might be in God. 22 Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: 23 Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth for ever. 24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the glory of man as the flower of grass. The grass withereth, and the flower thereof falleth away: 25 But the word of the Lord endureth for ever. And this is the word which by the gospel is preached unto you.
II COR. 1 (19)
19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea. 20 For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God
If you are not IN HIM? You have no promises from God; no guarantees! No true greatness.
